Off the Beaten Track Things To Do In Seattle

Seattle, Washington, is a major coastal seaport and the largest city in the Pacific Northwest. The ‘little’ big city by the sea overlooking Elliot Bay is not only the birthplace of Starbucks and Boeing, but home to music greats and the music trends that made them great.

There is certainly nothing sleepless about Seattle – the emerald city crowned with majestic mountains and lush northwest pines.  From big city scenes to nature filled excursions, there are plenty of attractions to choose from all year round.  Here are some of the more unusual options.

Year round ice cream tour?

Year round ice-cream cruises in Seattle? This does sound unusual and in winter it may well be, but every Sunday, several ferry tours take place exploring the waterways that surround Seattle. Departing from South Lake Union Park, this 45min tour explores the wooden floating homes made famous in Sleepless in Seattle (and passes where filming took place), floats by Gas Works Park and other areas, all accompanied by strange background music and humorous commentary. And all while you eat ice-cream.  Yum!

Pike Place Markets Ghost Tour

It is said that the souls of Seattle start to stir as the sun sets over Pike Place Market. A lady running in high heels through the market, a young boy in a bead shop and victims of Doctor Hazzard are all rumoured to be daily visitors. Spend 75min roaming the market hallways, alleys and shops after hours and learn of the historic and controversial past.

Sub Seattle Tour

This is not your average city tour. Touted as a subculture safari, enjoy a 90min narrated visit to off the beaten track locations such as Bruce Lee’s burial ground, the house where Kurt Cobain lived and died and the Wah Mee massacre site in Chinatown.  The Sub Seattle Tour explores the lessor known history of  Seattle with a tour of some of its oldest neighbourhoods.

Ye Old Curiosity Shop

Established in 1899, this is one of the oldest running shops in North America.  Ye Old Curiosity Shop houses an eclectic mix of artefacts and treasures. Showcasing jewellery made from insects, shrunken heads, paintings on pin heads, mummies and fleas in dresses; this is THE house of oddities.

Boeing Museum and Factory Tour

As a self-confessed aviation geek, I would be remiss in not mentioning the Boeing Factory tour, a fascinating look at the production line of some of the world’s most iconic aircraft – from the 747 and Triple 7 to the famous 787 Dreamliner.  Anyone interested in aviation will love this tour.
