One of the best times to visit the U.S.A. is around the time of Independence Day celebrations on 4 July. With summer in full swing the country enjoys this holiday outdoors – and what better way to enjoy it than with family, friends and fellow countrymen.
Independence Day celebrations are simple and informal and most celebrate the day with a picnic or BBQ or trip to the beach. Of course all the favourite summer foods will be served, and in my family that was usually hot dogs, bratwurst and hamburgers with potato salad, juicy red tomatoes from the garden, devilled eggs and pickles and of course watermelon, fruit salads and apple pie for dessert.
Not living near a beach we would often have a picnic and BBQ in one of the lush city parks or at my Aunt and Uncle’s inviting cottage on beautiful Silver Lake in Northern Wisconsin. With the warm sun shining through the trees and shimmering off the lake or nearest swimming hole this most patriotic holiday would usually pass in the same care-free, happy way with a swim, boat ride, maybe an impromptu baseball or volley ball game, enjoying delicious food and good company with a real lemonade, iced tea or cold beer in hand.
As the sun sets almost every city and town in America prepares for their fireworks celebrations. Take a blanket or some chairs and enjoy the light show. For me two of the most memorable fireworks displays were in Washington D.C. and in St. Louis. Fireworks over the National Mall in Washington light up the night sky and the beautiful monuments below while the impressive display in St. Louis shines over The Mississippi River, Gateway Arch and the historic court house. No matter where it is though, July 4 celebrations are sure to be memorable, bringing people together for a most American holiday.
Happy Fourth everyone! Enjoy and stay safe!
