New York is famed for its sights and sounds, but which landmarks should you endeavour to see on your getaway to the Big Apple? We’ve put together a list of 5 things to do in New York, so you’ll be in no doubt as to what is really worth checking out. From Central Park to the Statue of Liberty, your New York holiday is guaranteed to be action-packed and unforgettable.
1. Empire State Building
It might be an obvious choice, but you really can’t beat the Empire State Building. Not only is it an example of superb modern architecture, but the views are spectacular. You will be taken up to the 86th floor, where New York’s one-of-a-kind skyline greets you in all its glory.
If you’re feeling daring, and aren’t afraid of heights, there is the option to journey up to the 102nd floor, where the scenery becomes even more captivating. If it’s a windy day you might even feel the building sway slightly – don’t worry, its normal! There is a charming gift shop downstairs, where you can buy mementos to remember the day by.
2. Statue of Liberty
Another classic choice, the Statue of Liberty is a sight viewed by most tourists who come to New York – and with good reason too. It’s not just Lady Liberty who makes the trip worthwhile, but the journey to Liberty Island itself.
Sailing on the ferry to the island is an exciting and unforgettable experience, and the scenery along the way is truly fantastic. Upon arriving at Liberty Island, you can enjoy a picnic-style lunch whilst gazing up at the impressive monument, and journey inside the Statue of Liberty for a closer inspection.
3. Macy’s
Macy’s spans an entire block, a pretty impressive feat, and is ideal for tourists who love to shop. Whether you’re after the latest perfume or designer handbag, Macy’s is sure to have it.
One of the defining features of its interior are the original wooden escalators, which give you a sense of the department store’s history as you ride up and down them. When you’re worn out from shopping, you can always go down to the basement floor where Macy’s Cellar Bar and Grill awaits – be sure to order one of their burgers!

4. Central Park
Central Park is an iconic landscape in New York, nestled in the heart of the city. Although it is never free from other tourists, the 843 acres of land are plenty big enough to share. There are various ways to travel around the park, horse and carriage being a popular choice.
However, renting a bicycle and riding it around the park is just as wonderful, with several different routes to choose from. If it’s a hot, sunny day then taking a picnic and enjoying it in the park is a wonderful idea too.
5. American Museum of Natural History
The American Museum of Natural History is rife for exploration, with various fascinating exhibits being shown there. As you enter the museum, you are greeted by terrifyingly large skeletons of dinosaurs and whales, and that’s just the start!
There is a choice of permanent exhibitions to visit, such as the Hall of North American Mammals, and other special exhibitions too. Once you’ve finished journeying through the many rooms there is an impressive gift shop worth visiting.
