What you need to know when packing for a long haul flight

Travelling long haul can be daunting and often packing for different seasons is required. But it’s not just packing clothing that you need to consider. Here are some handy tips to get you through, ensuring you are well prepared for all occasions.

Is your passport valid?

When does your passport expire? This can be easily overlooked and is a situation with the potential to halt your travel plans before you take off. Most countries require 3-6mths validity on your passport to allow entry. It can take several weeks to get a passport renewed and quite costly if you need it in a hurry.

Do I need a visa for the USA? YES!

All Australian passport holders and most other nationalities require an ESTA (Electronic System Travel Authorisation) to gain entry into the USA. This has a small fee incurred and generally lasts for 2 years and must be produced on arrival. This is required to be purchased on-line at least 3 days prior to departure. If in doubt contact your travel agent or airline direct or reference the Department of Homeland Security website.

Pack weather wise

Always check the weather for your destination. Depending on where you are travelling, weather can vary dramatically. During the winter months there may be snow in the north but sun and warmth in the south. But even warm climates can have cool evenings during certain times of the year.

Spare clothes in your carry on bag

When travelling there is a small risk that your bag may go on holidays and end up in a destination not intended. Prepare for this by packing a spare set of clothes in your carry on bag. Underwear, socks and a t-shirt are a great back-up. Thankfully I have only needed to use them once!

Liquids on board

This can be very confusing. But all you need to know about liquids on board is 100mls or less when travelling internationally. No one item may be larger then 100mls or it will be confiscated by security. This applies to everything from canned food to deodorants or perfumes. Most regular sized deodorants and tubes of toothpaste are under 100mls and supermarkets generally have a section dedicated to travel products that meet requirements. Remember these must be displayed in a clear plastic bag; a large sandwich bag is fine. Read our blog for tips on getting through airport security.

It’s so true Sue! I recommend the Bose noise cancelling head phones – I never travel without them…worth every cent 🙂

  2. I always travel with an airplane travel jack adaptor so you can use your regular headphones when watching the movies – improves the sound quality/enjoyability massively!
